pp.119 with 16 watercolour paintings and b/w. sketches throughout. 4to. From Eric Hosking’s library with his bookplate to front pastedown. Signed by John Cyril Harrison to verso of title-page. Nr. fine hardback in vg. dw. with a little loss to top of spine.
John Cyril Harrison’s (1898-1985) talent as an artist was precocious. He spent most of his life in Norfolk. He painted in England, Scotland and Iceland and in later life he also became a regular visitor to Africa. His signature is interesting in that he developed the way he drew it from bold, distinct lettering to a more fluid style. The signature within this book is a very good example of the latter style. Eric Hosking was 'Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived' (Gemma Padley). He was part of the New Naturalist Editorial Board and attended their first meeting in January 1943 where he would take on the role as photographic editor.
