Bannerman, D. & Lodge, G. The Birds of the British Isles.
1st. Ed. Pub. Oliver & Boyd. 1953-63 Twelve volume set with colour plates by George E. Lodge. 4to. TEG. Author David Bannerman's set with his bookplate to Vol. I. Neat repair to title page of Vol. I o/w. contents exceptionally clean and fine. A few handwritten pencil notes which appear to be in DB's hand. Handsomely bound by Period Binders (Bath, UK) in half-green morocco leather over green cloth boards with raised bands, gilt lettered and decorated to spine, all in fine condition. With original dustwrappers bound in at the end of each volume. A wonderful set. Prov: Most recently in the library of David Evans who was a valued friend of David Bannerman (b.1886 d.1979). Vol. I has a photograph of David Bannerman and David Evans (dated Summer 1976) attached to the ffep. A quite superb set of one of the most important works ever published on British ornithology.
With some fascinating inserts. (1) An important 6-page letter (dated 04.06.64) from DB to his dear friend Major W.M. Congreve (Ed. Of the Oologists Record). The letter is fascinating and quite wide-ranging e.g. DB sees the changes happening in ornithology and that publications like the Oologists Record have 'had their day'. DB had an encounter with R.K. Cornwallis and recounts it. DB also talks of the lack of co-operation he found with other publications. (2) Colour plate submitted for DB's approval of an American Hawk Owl on which DB has written 'An excellent reproduction' (signed DB 13.07.54). (3) A signed letter from Seton Gordon in relation to writing a review of DB's work. (4) Each volume has its own published review loosely inserted. (5) A good number of other inserts incl. letters to DB from Oliver & Boyd, an original 6-page illustrated Publishers advert for 'The Birds of The British Isles', an obituary for George Lodge, a 4-page Exhibition and Sale Catalogue of Birds of Prey paintings by George Lodge. (6) This set may have been intended for presentation to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On a letter from the Publisher to DB, DB has practised a hand-written dedication to the Queen.

He says that it will be the wrong time of year for Petrels and for landing on the Desertas. He acknowledged that given the reason for Boddington’s visit, the might not want to, but that if Boddington did want to meet up for birding, then he would happily do so. Bannerman also gives the address where he was staying. Also, loosely inserted is the newspaper obituary of Madeiran ornithologist Alec Zino.
