Bound in very attractive publisher’s decorative green buckram with gilt titles to spine in vg. to vg. plus condition.

Quarter leather over marbelled boards with marbelled end papers all thor. vg. Delightfully charming and very scarce.
Charles de Sainte-Maure, duc de Montausier (1610-1690) presented ‘The Poetical Garland of Julia’ to his spouse, Julia d’Angennes as a new-year’s gift. It consisted of a number of flowers painted in miniature by a celebrated artist, arranged in a book, with a madrigal underneath each. Julia d’Angennes was delighted with her gift. This, as noted in the Preface, is a humble imitation of the original.

The book, In a Tuscan Garden, published anonymously, is a charming description of the author’s adventures in setting up and maintaining the garden that was an important part of her life in Tuscany.
