George Forrest (1873–1932) was a Scottish botanist, who became one of the first western explorers of China's then remote southwestern province of Yunnan, generally regarded as the most biodiverse province in the country. Altogether, Forrest made seven trips to Yunnan, collecting samples and seeds and in total, he brought back perhaps 31,000 plant specimens.

Each species (except for a few which are leafless) is accompanied by a line illustration of its leaf as an aid to identification. There are keys to the families, genera and species and the meaning of every botanical name is explained.
