1st. Eng. Ed. Pub. J.M. Dent. 1928 Two volume set with over 600 b/w. illus. 4to. Hardbacks. Very minor spotting to fore-edges of text blocks and prelims., a crease to a ffep., & to a half-title o/w. contents fine. Original cloth boards with gilt decoration to front in nr. fine condition. A very pleasing set.
A valuable reference. Running chronologically, Volume I begins with Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and continues to gardening in the Renaissance Period. Volume II continues with more on the Renaissance (incl. Versailles) then onto China, Japan and the English Landscape gardens incl. Capability Brown. Gardening in the 19th Century follows and the work concludes with a study of America and Canada.
