A valuable reference. Running chronologically, Volume I begins with Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and continues to gardening in the Renaissance Period. Volume II continues with more on the Renaissance (incl. Versailles) then onto China, Japan and the English Landscape gardens incl. Capability Brown. Gardening in the 19th Century follows and the work concludes with a study of America and Canada.
