Practical information on aspects of gardening and garden design. For example, this volume provides information on newly introduced Pictoee Carnations and the transplanting of valuable trees and shrubs. Interestingly, contains an article on the Herefordshire Pomona and how the Woolhope Club did not want to make any profit from it, hence the small print run. A previous owner has written what apple varieties are found in the volumes for 1872 to 1878 inclusive (we have all these volumes in stock).

Pub. Groombridge. 1866 Six volume set with 358 hand coloured plates. Royal 8vo. With armorial bookplate of Capt. J.R. Minshull-Ford of Llwyngwern (8th Foot Regt.) to front pastedown of each volume. Closed tear to p.193 in Vol. III. Minor spotting to Vol. III even less so to other volumes and o/w. contents fine. With interesting pencil note by Capt. Minshull-Ford about a Bullfinch he kept (between 1895 & 1898) and how it had been trained and was very intelligent to Bullfinch entry (Vol. VIII). Original gilt lettered and richly decorated bindings in vg. condition.

Hardback. Very minor spotting, minor crease to blank margin of one plate o/w. contents exceptional and in fine condition. With B.O.U. bequest bookplate to each front pastedown and a signature to Vol. I. Original, gilt lettered and richly decorated green cloth in nr. fine condition. A superb set of the preferred second edition.
With neat handwritten period notes to the Great Auk entry thus ‘Lord Lilford obtained at Stevens’ auction rooms on Friday July 2nd 18_, 2 Auk’s eggs for over £100 each’ and ‘Another five specimens bought by Mr Field at Stevens for 160 guineas. 18 Dec 1887.’.
