George Forrest (1873–1932) was a Scottish botanist, who became one of the first western explorers of China's then remote southwestern province of Yunnan, generally regarded as the most biodiverse province in the country. Altogether, Forrest made seven trips to Yunnan, collecting samples and seeds for the Herbarium and for avid collectors willing to pay for new species to add to their collections. In total, he brought back perhaps 31,000 plant specimens.

Handwritten transcript of original. early 1900s pp.22. Small 4to. A handwritten transcription of Macvicar’s much respected ‘A Key to British Hepaticae’ which first appeared in the ‘Journal of Botany’ in 1901. Contents fine, bound in stiff card covers in nr. fine condition. Comes with an original copy of the fascinating (12-page) Associates’ Card for the Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union (for 1932) which details who did what within the Union. 16mo. Softback in nr. fine condition.
We believe the transcription was undertaken by Nicholas Martin Cuthbert (1877-1952), a methodist preacher, polymath and conductor of the York Choral Society. The transcription then came into the possession of Herbert Stansfield (b.1860), choir master at York Minster (from 1893) and a member of the York and District Field Naturalists’ Society, then remained in the family until we purchased it.
