With short closed tear to two pages and small loss to margin of one further text page. Most of page 313/314 missing. Recently rebound in half brown morocco with marbled boards. A handsome copy.
Originally designed as a companion to his 'Compleat Body of Husbandry' (1756), Eden was published in weekly parts with instructions for work in the garden for the forthcoming week. Self-taught, Hill had a great interest in natural science, and was friends with many of the luminaries of the day including Sir Hans Sloane.

This, the third, edition contains additions over earlier editions and contains ‘Catalogues of the Finest and Most Esteemed Varieties of each Flower’. This work by Thomas Hogg, the eminent nineteenth-century florist, is held in very high regard.

Some toning and marking internally. Ffep. with ownership inscription ‘John Cadmene, Book, 1731’ and manuscript calculations, part of blank margin neatly excised. Engraved title with contemporary ownership inscription ‘Rose Gregorye’ scored out. Contemporary leather boards in vg. plus condition, more recently rebacked, this in fine condition. Scarce. ESTC records just 12 copies worldwide.
Intended as a companion to the author's ‘Systema agriculturae’ (1669). The work ‘contains much useful advice and information for the practical gardener. The author, referred to by John Houghton as ‘the ingenious Mr. John Worlidge of Petersfield in Hampshire’, is generally considered one of the most enlightened of the seventeenth-century writers on gardening and husbandry’.

Maddock & Son were one of the most noted nurseries and cultivators of florist’s flowers of this period. ‘The Florist’s Directory’ is considered to have been the best English book on florist’s flowers for around 30 years. Five plates finely illustrate varieties of Hyacinth, Auricula, Polyanthus, Ranunculas, Tulips, Anemone, Carnation and Picotee. The other three illustrate roots and cultivation equipment including a frame or awning and a winter repository for Auriculas and Carnations.

Boards in very good condition being sunned in places and lightly rubbed on corners. Contents too in very good condition with scattered foxing to parts. Overall a very good set of this delightful work.
(Extract from Blanche Henrey), this is a treatise on the art of planting and laying-out plantations. A large part of the work is dedicated to a catalogue of trees and shrubs, alphabetically laid out using the Linnaen generic names; with a description and propagation information. This second edition comprises more information; in particular, on rural ornament (the laying out of grounds) together with descriptions of noted estates that Marshall visited with his thoughts and suggestions for improvement; some of the estates included are Persfield, near Chepstow; Stowe, near Buckingham and Fiswick near Lichfield.
