Back Bees: Their Natural History and General Management:

Huish, R. Bees: Their Natural History and General Management: Comprising a Full and Experimental Examination of the Various Systems of Native and Foreign Apiarians. New Enl. Ed. Pub. Henry Bohn. 1844

pp.xxvii, 458 with portrait frontis, illus. in text and 2-page publisher’s catalogue. 8vo. Hardback. Signature to front pastedown (dated 1932) and further early signature to verso of frontis. A little spotting to frontis., title page and occ. internally o/w. contents fine. Original blind-tooled decorated boards with gilt lettering to spine, thor. vg. to nr. fine. Most interestingly is a charming, handwritten, ‘Valuation of Timber etc. on an Estate at Swanington, now tenanted by Mr Richard Dewing’ dated July 25th 1810, on which is mentioned a Bee House which appears to have been valued alongside a Ladder and Garden Roll - the valuation having been undertaken by S. Sewell. A most interesting copy.

The greatly expanded edition of Huish’s detailed work. ‘Huish (1777-1850) attacked some of ‘the absurdities of M. Huber’ and this new edition contains an analytical exposition of the errors and theory of Huber’ (Harding).
