Charles Whymper (1853-1941) was an eminent British wildlife painter and illustrator. Robert Washinton Oates (1875-1957) was an English antique dealer and philanthopist with a keen interest in natural history. In 1954 he was instrumental in securing Gilbert White’s home, The Wakes, as a museum.
