Howard’s major work ‘combined very fine chromolitho plates with a detailed and pioneer account of the behaviour of this family.’ (Tate). James Fisher was at the heart of the conception of Collins' New Naturalist series and with Julian Huxley, formed the nucleus of the editorial board. Indeed 'His energy, intelligence and panache lay at the heart of the New Naturalist library's success in the 1940s and 1950s.' (Bernhard and Loe). Fisher went on to write 'The Fulmar' (1952) and was co-author of 'Sea-Birds' with Ronald Lockley (1954).
