Gurney, J.H. A Descriptive Catalogue of the Raptorial Birds in the Norfork and Norwich Museum. Part One: containing Serpentariidae, Polyboridae, Vulturidae. 1st. Ed. Pub. John Van Voorst. 1864

pp.90. Small 4to. Some minor spotting, o/w. contents fine. Beautifully bound in original ornate blind-tooled green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine, just a hint of wear to top of spine, o/w. fine. With joint Van Voorst and Matchett and Stevenson pre-publication flyer for Henry Stevenson's 'The Birds of Norfolk' bound in at end. An exceptional copy of a very scarce work.

From a young age John Henry Gurney (1819-90) knew both Henry Doubleday and William Yarrell. On leaving school he entered the family banking business in Norwich. A collector from boyhood, he made great progress in forming the vast and celebrated collection of 'Raptores' in the Norwich Museum. His knowledge of birds of prey was outstanding (Mullens and Swann).
