William Cotton sailed to New Zealand in 1841 to help establish the Anglican church there. He was also concerned to spread the best practices in beekeeping among both settlers and Maori. On his return to England he spent many years as the vicar of Frodsham near Liverpool, where he continued to pursue his interest in bee-keeping.
