In October 1987, a great storm devastated the historic tree collections at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Wakehurst Place in West Sussex. The losses sparked the realization that the collections at Kew and Wakehurst Place lacked key representatives of the world's temperate woodlands. The Royal Botanic Gardens commissioned Flanagan and Kirkham to fill out the gaps and in their search for new plants, travelled to the rich temperate forests of Korea, Taiwan, eastern Russia and Japan.
