Vasey, Mrs. The Natural Historian. Or, Descriptive Traits of Animal History. Being a series of interesting anecdotes. Pub. H. Arliss. 1828
Two volumes bound as one. Volume 1 runs to 368 pages and volume 2, a further 270 pages. Wood-block illus. to text. Frontis. cropped closely, probably as published. Neat repair to p.231 (Volume 1) - contents very clean and in thoroughly vg. condition. Internal hinges very neatly strengthened, possibly when bound into cloth binding (c. mid to late 19th century) which is very neat, in vg. cond. and has gilt lettering on spine. Scarce. A vg. copy.
A charming work. Volume one focuses on quadrupeds and volume two on birds, marine and river life and reptiles. A great insight into thought of the time. Whilst all the usual animals and birds are covered, some interesting animals like ‘the Hart Beest’, ‘The Grimm’ and ‘The Many Horned Sheep’ are also mentioned.
