The approaches of Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton to landscape gardening proved to be at odds to the approach of Richard Payne Knight and Sir Uvedale Price. Publications by Knight and Price condemned the work of Brown and Repton. There then followed a series of publications by Repton, Price and Knight in which they defended themselves and attacked each other. A Letter to H. Repton, Esq is one such of these works, and helps greatly in understanding the history and development of landscape gardening.
