Norman Charles Kingsley Lighton (1904-1981) was born in Wonderboom near Pretoria, and began his working life as an architect, but is far better known as a painter of birds. In 1936 he was seconded to the Transvaal Museum in Pretoria to illustrate Dr Austin Roberts's book ‘The Birds of South Africa’, first published in 1940. As well as illustrating other bird books, he continuted to supply illustrations for subsequent editions until the fourth edition published in 1978.
