Pub. Lizars, Edinburgh. (1834) Two volumes bound in one; pp.[8], [i]-iii, 147, [8], [i]-iv, 166 plus 6-pages of publisher’s adverts. With 64 hand-coloured plates, 2 hand-coloured title-pages and 2 portrait frontis. Small 8vo. Hardback. Minor off-setting and spotting, o/w. contents fine. More recent half-calf binding with period style paper label, all in nr. fine condition.
The first portrait frontispiece depicts Carl Linnaeus, with the second being an image of Thomas Pennant.

1st. Ed. Pub. van Voorst. 1862-1869 Five volume set, each with colour frontis., plus 142 b/w. plates. 8vo. Hardbacks. Ex. academic lib. Very minor spotting to text, o/w. fine. Spotting to some plates, the majority clean and fine. More recent ochre cloth binding, gilt lettered spines, lib. labels neatly removed, o/w. in fine condition. A very pleasing set.
With four van Voorst catalogues bound in for December 1860, January 1863, one not dated (c. 1867) and May 1868.

1st. Ed. Pub. for the Author by Archer & Sons, Belfast. [1874] pp.[4],[1],ii, [2], [1], ii-viii, [1], 2-152 with 11 lithograph plates plus 12-pages of adverts. Large 8vo. Hardback. Very minor spotting to fore-edges of text block and internally o/w. contents fine. Endpapers renewed. Original green cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine neatly repaired at spine ends, gently bowed, all in thor. vg. to nr. fine condition.
Johnson (1840?-1906) was an English landscape architect and disciple of Ruskin. Little is known of his early life, but it is known that he worked for the Manchester Botanical Garden as a flower arranger in 1867. He went on to become one of the most significant prophets of naturalistic planting through his association with Ruskin. In 1868, he became the curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Belfast.

1st. Ed. Pub. Tryon Gallery, London. 1971 pp.[xviii] with 16 fine colour chromolithograph plates, each with supporting text leaf. Some spotting to verso of frontis., and to a couple of tissue guards. Two tissue guards a little creased, one with a small hole, o/w. contents fine. Original half-vellum by Zaehnsdorf with some spotting to the vellum o/w. fine. Housed in matching slipcase which is mottled and marked. Copy No. 127 from a Limited Edition of 406 copies - signed by Paul Jones.
Paul Jones (1921-1997), the highly regarded Australian artist, painted the magnificent botanical illustrations for ‘Flora Superba’ and they are very much reminiscent of Thornton’s ‘Temple of Flora’. The plates were printed in multi-colour lithography at the Curwen Press.

European Butterflies and Moths. Kirby, W.F. European Butterflies and Moths.
1st. Ed. Pub. Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. 1882 pp.lvi, 427 with 61 fine hand-coloured plates and 1 b/w. plate. 4to. Hardback. Scattered foxing to ends, elsewhere internally any spotting is largely confined to blank margins of text leaves. A spot or two to a handful of plates o/w. plates are clean and fine. Old, small, splash mark to text p.139. Neat repair to verso of plate 2 which also has ‘Murray, Carnforth’ in pencil. A previous owner has neatly cross-referenced in light pencil on plates and text where each butterfly and moth occurs within. Handsome recent binding of burgundy half leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering, decoration and raised bands to spine all in fine condition. A pencil inscription testifies that this copy was once the property of James Murray of Carnforth (Collector and Supplier) and that the rebind took place in June 2006.
The plates are especially pleasing.

Charles Darwin said of the key role he played in the publication of this book "In 1879, I had a translation of Dr. Ernst Krause's Life of Erasmus Darwin published, and I added a sketch of his character and habits from materials in my possession. Many persons have been much interested by this little life, and I am surprised that only 800 or 900 copies were sold. Owing to my having accidentally omitted to mention that Dr. Krause had enlarged and corrected his article in German before it was translated, Mr Samuel Butler abused me with almost insane virulence..."

A very pleasing set.
Richard and John Lander's fascinating account of their expedition to the termination of the Niger. In addition to the plates and maps, there are some illustrations within the text and a 12-page section details the stores, medicines and surgical instruments they took with them.
