The lithographs reproduced here do not come from Gould’s ‘Birds of Europe’, but from his ‘Birds of Great Britain’ since the illustrations are much more elaborate. They were chosen as a celebration of his work and to favour France’s common nesting or migratory avifanua.

1st. Ed. Pub. The Studio. 1930 pp.6 plus eight tipped-in colour plates of woodcuts. 4to. Nr. fine hardback in vg. dw. with sunning to spine and closed tears to rear panel. Although not inscribed, from the library of ornithologist, artist, illustrator, author and editor Robert Gillmor MBE (purchased by us in May 2023). Loosely inserted are a colour photocopy of a Bresslern-Roth print with notes by Gillmor regarding a 2006 auction of said print, together with a photocopied article about Bresslern-Roth and three pages from ‘The Studio’ periodical of 1927 containing an article about Bresslern-Roth’s work.
A delightful insight into the life and work of Norbertine von Bresslern-Roth (1891-1978) the Austrian painter and printmaker. She was known for pioneering the linocut print technique so it’s probably not a surprise to find this work in the library of Robert Gillmor.
