The author W. Hay was based in the village of Corrie, on the island of Arran, Scotland. In his preface, Hay wrote ‘This humble edition to Poultry Literature has been made at the request of many friends interested in Artificial Incubation, who have no practical experience in this fascinating subject.’. Hay employed the use of an Incubator manufactured by Charles Hearson of Regent Street, London and it is illustrated within his book. A most charming and very practical work.

Swedish explorer and travel writer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) made four expeditions to Central Asia, studying the topography and geology of the region, as well as both the prehistoric and modern culture. Painstakingly dedicated to his research, Hedin documented his travels thoroughly and "Trans-Himalaya" is an account of Hedin's exploration of Tibet, particularly the Transhimalaya, a 1,600-kilometre long mountain range.

Has benefited from professional repairs to verso of frontis., to four plates and two text leaves. Wanting most of p. 313/314. Short closed tears to three text pages, blank lower corner of one plate & index leaf removed and very small hole to Plate 55. A very minor amount of spotting o/w. contents very clean indeed and near fine. Hand colouring to two illustrations on Plate 1. Handsome, recent binding of half calf over marbled boards with gilt lettering and raised bands, all in fine condition.
'Eden' contains descriptions and cultural details concerning the various products of the garden under the time of year in which they flower or fruit, the phrase name used by Linnaeus for each plant is given, and each is referred to its place in that author's sexual system, which is explained. Advice is offered on what to do each month in the kitchen, flower and fruit gardens, and among other subjects covered by this book is the making of a garden with advice concerning choosing of the site.' Very handsome, contemporary, panelled full-calf leather, richly decorated with gilt and blind-tooling. Professionally rebacked, with corners neatly repaired. Boards lightly rubbed in places, o/w. in thor. vg. condition. Prov: John Rous, 1st Earl of Stradbroke (1750-1827), his bookplate, and Coronet ink-stamp to verso of front endpapers. Large-paper copy. Scarce.
A very pleasing, large paper copy of one of Hooker’s earliest and most scarce works. A large number of the specimens illustrated were collected by Alexander Humboldt, whom Hooker met in Paris in 1814. Furthermore, there are also descriptions of rare mosses found by Archibald Menzies at Dusky Bay, New Zealand, during Vancouver’s 1791 voyage on the ‘Discovery’.

Engraved title with contemporary ownership inscription ‘Rose Gregorye’ scored out. Contemporary leather boards in vg. plus condition, more recently rebacked, this in fine condition. Scarce. ESTC records just 12 copies worldwide.
Intended as a companion to the author's ‘Systema agriculturae’ (1669). The work ‘contains much useful advice and information for the practical gardener. The author, referred to by John Houghton as ‘the ingenious Mr. John Worlidge of Petersfield in Hampshire’, is generally considered one of the most enlightened of the seventeenth-century writers on gardening and husbandry’.

Johnson (1840?-1906) was an English landscape architect and disciple of Ruskin. Little is known of his early life, but it is known that he worked for the Manchester Botanical Garden as a flower arranger in 1867. He went on to become one of the most significant prophets of naturalistic planting through his association with Ruskin. In 1868, he became the curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Belfast.
