The Birds of Australia and the Adjacent Islands. Parts I-II in one Volume. Gould, John & McEvey, Allan. The Birds of Australia and the Adjacent Islands. Parts I-II in one Volume.
Pub. Lansdowne. 1979 Twenty colour plates with title pages and supporting text plus Appendices by Alan McEvey which include two facsimiles of pages from Gould’s manuscript. Folio. Very minor spotting to fore-edges of text block o/w. a fine hardback. Bound in Publisher’s wheat coloured cloth with portrait of John Gould to front board. Copy No. 101 from the Limited Edition of just 500 copies and signed by Alan McEvey.
This is a facsimile edition of the two-part work ‘The Birds Australia and the Adjacent Islands’ published by John Gould in 1837 and 1848, now widely known as the Cancelled Parts because they were subsequently withdrawn and their contents included in the seven volume ‘The Birds of Australia’ (1840-1848). In his introduction McEvey ‘traces the complicated bibliographical history of this work and provides invaluable information on recorded copies, loose plates and original drawings’.
