The focus of these BWP updates was to bring up-to-date the original accounts in the nine volume work that were most out-of-date.

Comprises descriptions of over 740 species of birds occurring in the Western Palearctic, of which 600 are breeding species. Illustrated using colour plates which were specially commissioned for this work. Illustrators included N.W. Cusa, Robert Gillmor, Sir Peter Scott and others. Eggs are also displayed, as are voice sonograms, melograms and annual cycles. This edition was limited to a print run of 5,000 complete sets.

The original work was published between 1866 and 1870 in twenty-one parts in a limited edition of an uncertain number. The original plates were executed by Diggles. His niece, Rowena Birkett, was the artist who hand-coloured each plate. This facsimile limited edition reproduces the original accurately. This volume contains the plates from parts 15-21 from the original. This alike with the original has become scarce.
