Handbook of the Birds of Europe the Middle East and North Africa. Cramp, Stanley (Chief Ed.). Handbook of the Birds of Europe the Middle East and North Africa. The Birds of the Western Palearctic.
1st. Ed. Pub. Oxford University Press. 1977-1994 Nine volume set. 4to. Nr. fine to fine hardbacks in thor. vg. to fine dws. Complete set of the preferred ‘Oxford University Press’ edition. From the library of ornithologist, artist, illustrator, author and editor Robert Gillmor MBE with one typed and two hand-written cards/notes and two pencil on tracing paper (one annotated) drawings by Gillmor. Robert Gillmor contributed a great deal to the production of ‘The Birds of the Western Palearctic. He was a member of the editorial board on all volumes, a named illustrator (in Vols. I, III & IV) and the dustwrapper illustrator for this magnificent work. A truly unique set.
The typed card is from Stanley Cramp, the Chief Editor of these volumes, to Robert Gillmor requesting the re-drawing of one of the plumage illustrations for Vol. 5. One hand-written card is from P.J. Grant of ‘British Birds’ to Stanley Cramp to say that some corrections are needed for the topography charts in Vol.1. A further hand-written note, possibly by Stanley Cramp, confirms Grant’s suggestions and also referring to a wrongly drawn image being the result of a misunderstanding between Robert Gillmor and Jan Wattel.
