British Fresh-Water Fishes. Houghton, William. British Fresh-Water Fishes.
Pub. William Mackenzie. 1879 Two volume complete set, with 41 fine wood engraved plates after A.F. Lydon and printed by B. Fawcett in colour, plus many fine engravings. A little feint foxing on text, most plates are very bright and clean. Bound in original dark maroon decorated cloth with attractive gilt design. Corners of boards and spine ends show some rubbing and pulling. Overall a vg.set.

Facsimile Pub. Decimus. 1979 With 12 magnificent plates by Jardine and Lizars. Elephant folio being 215 of a limited edition of 500. Bound in 1/4 morocco and cloth in cloth slip-case. Boards a little mottled in places, o/w. a fine copy in vg. to fine slipcase.
British Salmonidae is a magnificent memorial to Jardine who spent a large part of his life studying salmon and its relatives. This facsimile elephant folio is a testimony to Jardine’s skill with the pencil and brush and to the technical ability of Lizar his engraver. The work was first published between 1839 & 1841 and issued in 12 parts.

1st. Ed. Pub. D. Brown & T. Goodwin. 1698 pp.[xiv], 157, [ii] with one fold-out plate and one fold-out map. 8vo. Contents browned, two short closed tears to bird plate (also close-cropped on left side), o/w. fine. Stamp of Admiralty library to title page and second page of publisher’s adverts at rear. Early binding of half calf with marbled boards, neatly rebacked and recornered, all in very good plus condition. Rare.
‘St. Kilda fascinates people. It has done so for over 300 years, ever since Martin Martin wrote ‘A Late Voyage to St. Kilda’, published in 1698. It is the Hebridean island which, above all others, people want to visit’ (John Randall (2013) Chairman of the Islands Book Trust).

1st. Ed. Pub. Henry Sotheran. 1897 pp.xviii, 224 with many illustrations in text, coloured frontispiece, 6 full-page illustrations and 10 electro-etched plates. Folio. Hardback. The 10 electro-etched plates have some scattered foxing, very largely confined to their borders. Text very clean. Original illustrated binding lightly marked in places, showing a little rippling on boards, overall in vg. condition. Overall a vg. copy.
One of the first in-depth treatments of any group of British mammals. Superbly illustrated. J.G. Millais was a professional artist and dedicated naturalist. He spent years familiarising himself with the animals he illustrated in the interests of portraying them accurately.
