1st. Ed. Rep. Pub. Collins 1988 pp.ix, 565 with b/w. figs in text. 8vo. From Eric Hosking’s library with a reduced-size copy of his bookplate loosely inserted. Signed by W.G. Hale to title page. Fine softback.
W.G. Hale has written extensively in the fields of entomology and ornithology. He is the author of ‘Waders’ (No. 65) in the New Naturalist series and has written two works on H.L. Meyer and his superb contribution to the study of British Birds. Eric Hosking was 'Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived' (Gemma Padley). He was part of the New Naturalist Editorial Board and attended their first meeting in January 1943 where he would take on the role as photographic editor.

Contains an interesting account (illustrated with fold-out plate) of the excavation in 1862 of an Anglo-Saxon boat burial and cemetery near Snape.

Considers the lepidoptera of the Bristol district; articles on fungi and botany; an article on the Common Fin Whale washed up at Littleton Pill in 1885 and an extensive list of ‘Books in the Library of the British Naturalists’ Society’.
