A fascinating period insight into gardening in the United States. With correspondents from around the USA, Chicago produced its own gardening magazine (fortnightly) edited by William Falconer. Falconer was born in Scotland (b. 1850), trained at Kew, then emigrated to the USA in 1874. The aim of ‘Gardening’ was to be practical, unpretentious and ‘to teach the plain, ungarnished truth about every horticultural subject’.
