Meyer’s ‘Illustrations of British Birds’ published over a number of years from 1835 has been said to be ‘one of our most valuable illustrated works on Ornithology’ (Mullens and Swann 1917) and ‘with the possible exception of Lilford’s Birds -- the finest and most complete atlas of portraits of British avifauna (with their eggs) ever published’ (Woods 1931). Hale’s book aimed at determining the number and content of the various ‘series, ‘issues’ and/or editions of the folio ‘Illustrations’ and the octavo ‘Coloured Illustrations’ The contribution of other members of the Meyer family is examined.
